The old man in Eterna city.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide old man house

In this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide, we start with the topic about the old man. The whole purpose of the game is to go from city to city to find all the gym leaders, fight them and get to elite 4 and champion that way, right? True, but possibly the most fun element in the whole game is the grand underground! The very first step to get here is to talk to the old man in Eterna city. His house can be found next to the Pokemon center right after you enter Eterna city.

In Eterna city you have a lot of things to do like defeating team galactic and saving the owner of the bike store and defeating the gym leader, but apart from that you can spend hours here exploring what the grand underground is all about. Once you enter the house you can talk to the "Underground Man" who will give you the explorer kit. He tells you that he was the very first man to start digging the grand underground. So he is the creator of the grand underground.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide explorer kit

Now that you got the explorer kit you can start! With this you can go to the grand underground. You can find the explorer kit in the bag's key items. The icon looks like the one in the picture. Get ready for an adventure full of quests, Pokemon, treasures and mysteries! The old man will ask you to complete some tasks, but you may ignore them if you would like. Among other things, he asks you to bring up treasures, make a secret base, put statues in your secret base and visit someone else's secret base.

So to get started, choose the explorer kit in the key items section of your bag. Here you will find all the key items that are important during your adventure in sinnoh, including your bike, fishing pole and more. You can "register" the explorer kit so you don't have to open your bag every time to select it. Once you have done this you use the explorer kit and leave for the grand underground. The first time you do this you will meet gym leader Roark. Talk to him and then you can start exploring! On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Grand underground map (above ground and underground).

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide map

The next topic in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide is about the map. Possibly the first thing you will notice in the grand underground is the minimap that consists of a maze of corridors. This can be a bit overwhelming at first, but you will quickly get used to this. At some point you may even find yourself looking at your minimap more than your screen to move around the grand underground. As you can see, the grand underground consists of many corridors, as well as square-shaped areas in two types of sizes. Large and small areas.

In the beginning, these areas will be gray with a question mark. So feel free to explore these areas to find out which Pokemon you can catch in each area. The grand underground also consists of 6 different parts, the largest area of which can be explored right from Eterna city. The other 5 parts of the map are only accessible from other places in Sinnoh, as shown in the overhead map:

  • Largest middle area: Accessible from Eterna city and surrounding areas.
  • Smallest middle area: Accessible from Celestic town.
  • Area on lower left: Accessible from Twinleaf town and surrounding areas.
  • Area at lower right: Accessible from Sunyshore city.
  • Area top left: Accessible from Snowpoint city and surrounding areas.
  • Area at top right: Accessible from the fight area.
(Get here by taking the boat from Snowpoint city after defeating elite 4 and champion).

Everything there is to be found in the grand underground.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide mining

Next, we also talk a bit about the stuff you can dig up in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide. After you take a closer look at the map in the grand underground, you may have noticed that on the map there are a lot of yellow asterisks in the area where you are currently. Those are the treasures you can dig up!

The idea is to walk up to these starlets and then scan the area with the "ZL" button on your controller. If you do this while standing by an asterisk on the map you will notice that it starts to glisten against a wall. Go sign the wall and click "A" and you will automatically start digging at this spot!

You'll see the screen pop open as shown in this picture. What you see is fairly straight-forward. You have a hatchet and a hammer, and it's up to you to use these two tools to dig up the treasures. In the beginning you will be told how many treasures can be dug up: 2, 3 or 4 treasures. Here is how I dig to unearth as many treasures as possible before the squiggle line reaches the end and the ground will collapse:

I always start with the red hammer, you can switch from hammer to axe via the "R" button. Use the hammer on the brown ground parts, but not yet on the gray stone parts. The hammer hammers in a "+" shape so the idea is to hammer on a brown area that this plus shape definitely fits. You then hammer all over the brown part until you either while find a treasure or while there are no "+" shaped brown parts left.

In the first case, switch to the blue axe which only breaks 1 square instead of a "+" shape and carefully axe the treasure until you get it!

In the second case, you switch to hammering out the gray stone area with the hammer in the same way until you come across a treasure, and as in brown, you then use the chisel to dig out the treasure.

Lots of treasures can be dug up, including spheres, items and even fossils. Here is a list of everything that can be dug up:

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide sellers

Many of these objects, especially the spheres, can be exchanged with traders scattered throughout the grand underground. These traders trade your found objects for cool stuff like "pedestals" that you can proudly display your statues on in your secret base (more about that later). But you can also trade for TMs, digger drills, and so on! On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Pokemon in the grand underground.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide Pokemon

And now for a chapter on Pokemon in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide. As mentioned earlier, you can find multiple square-shaped areas all over the grand underground. These come in small and large sizes.

The small formats are fairly easy to find and just about every corridor in the grand underground is connected to a small area, the large areas on the other hand you only encounter 6 times, namely 1 for each underground area of the grand underground.

In the large areas you will undoubtedly find the more rare Pokemon, but that doesn't mean you can't find nice Pokemon in the small areas. In fact, in the grand underground you will find Pokemon that you simply cannot find above ground! So it certainly doesn't hurt to go down there regularly between your adventures to find out what Pokemon have been added.

Normally, you can find new Pokemon after you beat a new gym leader. Which Pokemon can you find all of them? The picture can already give you a hint, but be sure to investigate it yourself and be surprised of what nice Pokemon you can find here. On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Diglett and Dugtrio.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide Diglett

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide regarding Diglett and Dugtrio: A new feature added in this game that was not found in the old diamond and pearl games are the Diglett and Dugtrio that pop out of the ground at random moments when you are running around in the grand underground.

At first it may be unclear why that you can collect the sparkles that Diglett and Dugtrio leave behind, but once you play for a while this will become clearer. Still, I'll explain it for you: On the top left of your screen near the minimap you will see a bar with a counter. Keep an eye on this counter!

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide Dugtrio

In fact, this counter will increase each time you pick up the sparkles left by Diglett and Dugtrio. Diglett leaves 1 sparkle and Dugtrio leaves 3. So Diglett will also be more prevalent than Dugtrio.

It is recommended to play in online mode if you want to take advantage of this feature, since this counter counts up not only for you picked up sparkles, but also for those of all other players who are in the same grand underground server with you. Once the counter reaches 40 sparkles the text "Something good may happen in the Grand Underground" will appear and you will hear a sound like someone blowing a whistle.

As soon as this text appears it is up to you to decide as quickly as possible what you want to do, you have a choice between two options:

  • Go dig as fast as you can for a chance to find a rare "gorgeous" stone box that contains shiny statues! You can pretty much only find these when the counter reaches 40! (More about the stone boxes in a moment.)
  • Enter a square-shaped area as soon as possible to have a better chance of finding a shiny Pokemon! The chance is still fairly low but higher and jumps from the standard 1/4096 chance to the temporary 1/2048 chance! If you already find yourself in a square-shaped area when the counter reaches 40 and you hear the whistle, get out and back in quickly, otherwise you won't have a higher chance of finding the shiny one.

Normal and rare stone boxes.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide stone box

Next, we also talk about boxes briefly in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide. While digging for treasure, you can come across many different items. But something you will almost always come across is the stone box. It contains a statue of a Pokemon that you can then place in secret base. This picture shows the icon of a normal stone box. It contains a statue of a Pokemon with normal colors as you see them in battles.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide rare box

Unlike the normal stone box, you also have the rare version, the "gorgeous" stone box. This one looks the same but has sparkles and can only be found when the diglett counter is at 40. This rare stone box always contains a shiny Pokemon, but beware: it does not have the same color as shinies you see in battles. The shiny statues will always be made of a special green stone. On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Secret base.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide secret base entrance

The next topic in the Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide is the secret base. In the grand underground, you can pick a spot against a wall that you can see. This means that you can't put a secret base against a lower wall, but you can put one to the left, right or above. Choose a spot you like as a nice location and use the digger drill you got from the old man on the upper ground. You can also change your secret base by buying a new digger drill from one of the traders.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide placing statues

Once you have created your secret base you can go inside and find an empty room. This room can be covered with statues you dug up using the glass ball that is in the room.

Which statues you place can be important because it affects the type of Pokemon you can find in the square-shaped areas. For example, if you place an Infernape statue then you are more likely to find fire-type Pokemon, if you place an Empoleon then you are more likely to find water-type Pokemon, and so on.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide statues

You can also expand your secret base to fit more statues and thus also increase your chances of finding Pokemon of a certain type you want. You can do this expansion by talking to the right traders you can find in the grand underground corridors. Talk to the right trader and ask to expand your secret base. For this you are going to have to trade a lot of spheres though.

Here is a list of spheres to trade for the first expansion:

  • 60 Red Sphere S
  • 60 Blue Sphere S
  • 60 Green Sphere S
  • 30 Prism Sphere S
  • 30 Pale Sphere S

And here also a list of spheres you need for the second expansion:

  • 40 Red Sphere L
  • 40 Blue Sphere L
  • 40 Green Sphere L
  • 20 Prism Sphere L
  • 20 Pale Sphere L

Fossils.

Possibly the most fun topic of the Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide: Fossils. As mentioned above, you can dig up a lot of fossils in the grand underground. These fossils can be developed into real Pokemon in Oreburgh city. In Oreburgh city you can find a museum, talk to the right-hand man behind the counter and he will immediately notice that you have a fossil with you. Choose the fossil you want to give to him if you have several and he will tell you to leave for a while. Simply go out and back in and talk right back to the same man.

He will be a little rude at first and say you made him wait too long, even if you went right back in. Apparently he is very impatient, but despite that he will give you the Pokemon developed from the fossil! The standard Pokemon are Shieldon for Shining Pearl and Cranidos for Brilliant Diamond, but once you catch or beat Palkia or Dialga you can find many more fossils! Which Pokemon can be developed from these I leave to you to discover! On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Generating Spiritomb.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide Spiritomb

Just a little creepy in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide with the topic about Spiritomb! During the story, you will find an NPC on route 208 right next to Hearthome city. This man will be standing next to a honey tree and hiding among the trees. He will give you the odd keystone, a crucial item you need to raise the Pokemon Spiritomb with! You're probably wondering what this has to do with the grand underground? Well, after all, you need the grand underground to raise Spiritomb!

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide Spiritomb stones

First, you will have to go with the odd keystone to a suspicious looking pile of rocks that can be found in route 209. Place the odd keystone in this and from then on a task will start to raise Spiritomb bit by bit. How to do this is by talking to the NPCs in the grand underground.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide NPC

In the original Diamond and Pearl games you had to interact with real players for this via wireless play, you could then talk to other players in the grand underground. In Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl this is no longer possible, so they have created an alternative solution for this.

In each area between the virekant-shaped areas there will be 1 NPC that you must talk to. Each NPC has its own name and you must have talked to all 32 NPCs before you can catch Spiritomb at the pile of rocks.

Be careful, though, because although each NPC has a fixed place where it spawns, it may occasionally happen that a different NPC spawns than the one that would normally be there. So it is recommended here click for a guide from "Gamerguides" to find all the names correctly and in the right place. I recommend making a list and ticking off all the names 1 by 1 until you find them all. On to the next topic of this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide!

Discovery slates and legendary Pokemon.

Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide discovery slates

The last topic we will talk about in this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide are the discovery slates you can dig up in the grand underground. You can only do this after you beat the Pokemon league and complete the Sinnoh pokedex.

You don't need to have caught all the Pokemon for this, but you do need to have seen them all! Once you've done that, Ramanas park is open, you can get here by walking down into Sandgem town and using surf on the sea.

In the grand underground, you can dig up mysterious shards (as shown in the photos below) that you can exchange for discovery slates. These discovery slates can then be placed in Ramanas park in the speciales tombs to awaken legendary Pokemon. Mysterious shards come in two different shapes: small (S) and large (L), you can either exchange while 3 small shards for 1 slate, or while 1 large shard for 1 slate. Wondering which slate generates which legendary Pokemon? Then here you have a list of all legendary Pokemon and their respective slate:

  • Discovery Slate: Regice, Regirock, Registeel
  • Kanto Slate: Articuno, Zapdos, Moltres (Only in Pokemon Shining Pearl)
  • Johto Slate: Raikou, Entei, Suicune (Only in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond)
  • Soul Slate: Latios, Latias
  • Rainbow Slate: Ho-oh (Only in Pokemon Brilliant Diamond)
  • Squall Slate: Lugia (Only in Pokemon Shining Pearl)
  • Oceanic Slate: Kyogre
  • Tectonic Slate: Groudon
  • Stratospheric Slate: Rayquaza
  • Genome Slate: Mewtwo

Thanks for reading this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide! Hopefully you now know the grand underground completely by heart thanks to this Pokemon BDSP grand underground guide and I wish everyone lots of fun playing! Gotta dig 'em all!
